McDowell County
McDowell County was formed from northern Tazewell County in 1858 and named for Virginia governor James McDowell. It became part of West Virginia in 1863, although local opinion on the Civil War and separation from Virginia differed from that of the new state’s northwestern counties. Earlier county-seat locations also changed before Welch became the present center. These administrative shifts are important when tracing records associated with the county’s early years and its changing state affiliation.
Welch provides the county’s principal civic reference point within a mountainous southern West Virginia landscape. The county borders Virginia to the south and west, so regional journeys can cross state as well as county lines. A visit or local-history project benefits from identifying a specific community rather than relying only on the wider Appalachian label. Mountain geography and changing jurisdictions both matter when connecting present-day places with older records.
